Trump’s Ceasefire Call Fails: Fighting Continues

Artillery attacks resumed early Sunday morning on the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia. This occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the two sides had agreed to a ceasefire following his phone call with both nations’ leaders.

Both sides blame each other
Cambodia and Thailand issued statements accusing each other of initiating the military action. Cambodia said it supports Trump’s proposal for an unconditional ceasefire, while Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham stated that talks could not proceed while attacks on Thai civilians continued.

According to him, Bangkok favors negotiations at the foreign minister level to set ceasefire terms. At the same time, Thailand wants to reach an agreement without third-party mediation.

Casualties are rising
After four days of conflict, the death toll has exceeded 30 people. Among them are 13 civilians in Thailand and 8 in Cambodia. More than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas in both countries.

Trump mediates
On Saturday, Donald Trump spoke with the prime ministers of both countries and urged them to meet immediately and achieve a ceasefire. On social media, he wrote, “Both parties are urgently seeking peace.” The U.S. government announced it would freeze customs negotiations with both nations until the conflict is resolved peacefully.
