In Berlin, the new section of the A100 highway was officially opened, which is the most expensive and remarkable in Germany's history. According to journalists, each meter of this road cost the state budget 225 thousand euros. This figure has been recorded as a record for road construction in Germany.
The length of the new motorway section is 3.2 kilometers, and the construction work lasted 12 years. The road was built with six lanes and placed 7 meters underground. During the project preparation, factors that could endanger the life of butterflies and other small animals were also considered, demonstrating an ecological approach.
The new highway section is expected to significantly ease the route for residents of cities near Berlin who commute to work daily, accelerate traffic flows, and reduce the load in some residential areas of the city. City residents and traffic experts consider the potential benefits of this project to be high.
At the same time, the project faces wide criticism. According to critics, the new road may further increase the number of residents and vehicles, worsening the city's ecological condition and air quality. Moreover, it is acknowledged that funds are insufficient for repairing and updating existing roads, bridges, and railway infrastructure in Berlin. From this perspective, constructing such an expensive highway seems illogical and controversial for some specialists.
