Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy spent his first day in prison exercising and writing a book. He was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of illegally financing the 2007 election campaign.
This was announced by Sarkozy's lawyer, Michel Darroua, to BFMTV in front of La Sante prison.
According to the lawyer, the former president was placed in a small 9-square-meter cell, where there is constant noise. He also had a short meeting with his wife in the afternoon.
"The first day in prison was difficult, but he endured it with patience. This is not Club Med, there are no amenities here," the defender said playfully.
As a reminder, at the end of September, a Paris court found Nicolas Sarkozy guilty in a case involving an election campaign funded by the Libyan government.
Sarkozy was sentenced not only to five years in prison but also to a fine of 100,000 euros and deprived of the right to hold public office for five years.
