A new tobacco restriction aimed at ensuring a healthy future has come into effect in the Maldives, according to the Ministry of Health.
Starting from November 1, any person born after January 1, 2007 — whether a local citizen or a tourist — is no longer allowed to purchase, sell, or use tobacco products.
According to the ministry, the rule applies equally to everyone, with no exceptions. The goal is to create a smoke-free, healthy generation.
Under the law, those who sell tobacco products to minors will face a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa. In addition, those who illegally use electronic cigarettes will be fined 5,000 rufiyaa.
It is known that the idea of a “smoke-free generation” was first implemented in New Zealand, but the restriction was later lifted after a change in government. A similar initiative is currently being discussed in the United Kingdom.
Experts describe this policy as an investment in public health.
