In Russia, the number of disabled people is increasing due to the war

The consequences of the war in Ukraine are becoming increasingly severe for Russian society. According to The Moscow Times, as a result of these armed conflicts, a "new army of disabled people" has emerged in the country. According to statistical data, this number equals the population of Pskov or South Sakhalin.

According to data published by the Unified Interdepartmental Information and Statistical System of the Federal Statistical Service of Russia, the number of people with disabilities in Russia increased by 190 thousand people in 2023-2024. By the end of 2024, the total number of people with disabilities in the country reached 11 million 122 thousand people. For comparison: this figure was 11.04 million in 2023 and 10 million 932 thousand in 2022.

This growth rate is considered the highest since 2007.

According to estimates by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), by the end of 2024, 376,000 people in Russia were seriously injured at the front and became disabled. In the period from the beginning of the war in 2022 to 2024, the total losses of the Russian army reached approximately 783 thousand people. At least 172,000 of them died, and 611,000 were injured.

In addition, 235,000 of the wounded recovered, while the rest remained disabled for life.
