Time travels faster on Mars than on Earth: scientists have discovered

Physicists at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have determined how time on Mars differs from Earth, according to The Astronomical Journal.

It turns out that the speed of time on the "Red Planet" changes constantly throughout the year. On Mars, one day is 40 minutes longer than on Earth, and the year is almost twice as long. These facts were known to science before, but scientists were more interested in the precise speed of the second on the planet.

According to calculations, a clock on Mars moves approximately 477 microseconds faster per day than on Earth. At the same time, due to the elliptical orbit of the planet and the gravitational influence of the Sun, this indicator can change by 226 microseconds per year.

Physicist Bijunat Patlana emphasizes that understanding how time travels on Mars is crucial for future research missions. This data will be useful in synchronizing navigation and communication, and will also allow the creation of GPS-type systems for other planets in the Solar System in the future.

Currently, the signal communication time between Earth and Mars fluctuates between 4-24 minutes. Accurate time synchronization ensures communication between planets in almost real time without data loss.
