The decline of water resources in India is putting pressure on the operations of large beverage manufacturing companies. In particular, water scarcity in the northwestern state of Rajasthan is making it difficult to maintain a balance between industrial needs and those of the population.
A large part of Rajasthan falls within a desert region, and groundwater reserves are rapidly decreasing. Under existing laws, the free movement of products between states is restricted, forcing companies to carry out production in these areas despite water shortages. This further increases pressure on water resources.
Large companies say they are taking steps to reduce water use and restore water resources. Water-saving technologies are being introduced at factories, rainwater is being collected, and used water is being treated and reused. Nevertheless, in some areas water extraction remains higher than its natural recharge rate.
Local residents are dissatisfied with water supply problems, and in some villages drinking water is delivered only once a week. The government is seeking to strengthen oversight of water use and impose restrictions in water-scarce areas. Experts stress that cooperation between the state, industry and society is essential to address the water problem.
