Military tensions in Europe are rising to a new level. Recent satellite images have revealed that Russia is deploying its most advanced nuclear-capable Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missiles on Belarusian territory. The secret construction work is taking place just 180 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Urgent construction at the Krichev-6 air base
American experts, analyzing images provided by Planet Labs, have detected active activity at the former Krichev-6 air base in the Mogilev region of eastern Belarus.
- Time: Construction began in early August of this year, on a very short notice.
- Location: The base is very close to the Russian border (5 km), making it a strategically convenient point for targeting Ukraine and NATO countries.
- Confidence: Researchers say there is a 90 percent chance that mobile missile launchers will be deployed here.
Oreshnik — a warning to NATO?
Vladimir Putin has previously expressed his intention to deploy these systems in Belarus. Experts believe that this step is a “restraint” measure aimed at preventing NATO countries from supplying Ukraine with weapons capable of striking deep inside Russia.
- Capability: Oreshnik missiles are capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 5,500 kilometers.
- History: In November, this missile was first used to strike the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
Lukashenko’s position and Zapad-2025
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko called the arrival of these weapons in the country “not aggression, but a response to threats.” These missile complexes are expected to officially enter combat duty in December.
It is also said that scenarios for the use of the Oreshnik were developed during the Zapad-2025 military exercises held in September, and that this is part of the nuclear deterrence strategy of the Russian-Belarusian alliance.
Zelensky: "Belarus is surrendering its sovereignty"
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned this situation. According to him, Russia is trying to bypass Ukrainian defense systems not only with missiles, but also with drone attacks through Belarusian territory.
"Belarus is sacrificing its sovereignty for the sake of Russia's aggressive appetites. This is a serious threat, and we are preparing countermeasures together with our international partners," Zelensky said.
