Berlin supports diplomacy on Hormuz

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said he does not see NATO playing a role in restoring transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking in Brussels before a meeting of European Union foreign ministers, he said the alliance has made no decision on the issue and is not expected to take responsibility for keeping the waterway open.
Wadephul added that separate steps related to the Strait of Hormuz are being discussed within the European Union, but no concrete decision has been made so far. He stressed that Germany continues to support a diplomatic rather than military solution to the growing tensions around the strategic route.
He also said recent events in the Middle East do not currently amount to a direct threat to NATO. His comments came amid reports that Iranian drones entering Turkish airspace were intercepted by NATO air defense systems deployed there.
Earlier, Donald Trump had called on NATO countries to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, warning that the alliance could face a “very bad future” if it failed to act. The strait remains one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, and any disruption there could raise broader security and economic concerns.
