An appellate court in South Korea has issued a significant ruling in a high-profile case. According to the court's verdict, the previously assigned sentence for former First Lady Kim Gon Xi has been reviewed and further increased.
It is worth noting that she was previously sentenced to 20 months in prison in January of this year. However, the appellate court re-evaluated the decision and extended the prison term to four years. At the same time, a financial fine of 50 million won (approximately 34,000 US dollars) was also imposed on her. AFP reports this.
According to investigation materials, Kim Gon Xi is accused of a series of violations. In particular, it is alleged that she gained financial profit by artificially manipulating stock prices related to car sales. According to estimates, she earned 810 million won (around 564,000 dollars) as a result of these actions.
Furthermore, she is also accused of violating campaign finance regulations. This situation has further intensified political and legal discussions in the country.
Another key figure in this case—Kim's spouse, former President Yun Sok Yol—has also been held accountable. In January, he was sentenced to five years in prison for obstructing the activities of law enforcement agencies.
It is reported that the former head of state is currently involved in four simultaneous court proceedings. This indicates the severity of the situation in the country's political life.
In short, this case signifies an increased focus on issues of corruption and the rule of law in South Korea. The court's decisions may also influence future political processes.
