Response to bank demand: man arrives with skeleton

An extraordinary incident in India has captured public attention. According to India Today, a man brought his deceased sister's skeleton to a bank in an attempt to withdraw funds from her account.
It is reported that Jitu Munda (50), a resident of Dianali village, sought to withdraw 20,000 rupees ($211) from the bank account of his sister, Kalra Munda (56), who passed away on January 26, 2026. Kalra Munda left no official heirs; therefore, the funds were legally considered to belong to her brother.
However, employees of "Odisha Gramin" bank required him to provide official proof of death — a certificate or other formal evidence. Due to his illiteracy, the man did not fully comprehend the requirement and attempted to resolve the issue in a different manner.
According to his account, bank staff insisted that he must "bring the account holder." Taking these words literally, the man dug up his sister's grave and brought her skeleton to the bank to prove her death.
“I went several times, but they wouldn't give me the money. They said, 'Let the owner come.' I told them she was dead, but they didn't believe me. Finally, having no other choice, I opened the grave and brought the bones,” he explained to journalists.
The situation quickly drew the attention of law enforcement agencies. After investigating the circumstances, the police announced they would assist the man in obtaining the funds through legal procedures. The reburial of the deceased's remains was also supervised.
Local government representatives have contacted the bank, demanding that the matter be resolved promptly and measures be taken to pay the man the funds he is entitled to.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of legal literacy for ordinary citizens.
