A rare ruby weighing 11,000 carats, or 2.2 kilograms, has been discovered in Myanmar. This was announced by the country's Ministry of Information.
The gemstone was found in the Mogok district near Mandalay. This region is one of Myanmar's main centers for gemstone mining.
Experts believe the newly discovered ruby is superior in quality and color to many previous stones. Some experts suggest it could be even more valuable than the famous 21,450-carat ruby found in 1996.
The stone has a deep red color with a yellowish tint and is characterized by a glass-like luster. It is also reported that it is currently being kept in its raw, unprocessed state.
The exact value of the ruby has not yet been disclosed. There is also no official information about who found it.
Myanmar is considered one of the world's largest suppliers of jade and other gemstones. At the same time, it is noted that a black market for gemstones exists in the country.
For reference, in 2015, a 25.59-carat ruby was sold for $30.33 million at a Sotheby's auction in Geneva.
