Could the “Alligator Alcatraz” prison in the USA be closed?

Another controversial issue regarding US migration policy has emerged. The potential closure of the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center in Florida, known for its unusual name, is being discussed.

Ron DeSantis announced this, noting that the matter is currently in the preliminary review stage. According to him, the new administration, including the US Department of Homeland Security, is re-evaluating the facility's operations.

Initially presented as an effective measure against illegal immigration, the center has faced serious criticism over time. The main objections concern its extremely high costs and lack of expected results. Reports indicate that over $1 million per day is spent to maintain the facility.

According to The New York Times, current negotiations are in the early stages, and experts consider the project economically inefficient. Therefore, the issue of closing it rather than maintaining it is being seriously considered.

Interestingly, “Alligator Alcatraz” opened in the summer of 2025 and caused a stir due to its location. Built in a swampy area inhabited by alligators and venomous snakes, it is known for its dangerous environment. Initial plans intended for this center to serve as a model for similar future facilities.

However, the situation is changing completely today. Due to high costs, efficiency issues, and public criticism, the fate of the project remains in question. A final decision on whether to close it or continue its operations is expected in the near future.
