Global wine consumption has dropped sharply

Global wine consumption has fallen to its lowest level in decades, marking a record decline not seen since 1957. This was reported by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
According to analyses, a total of 208 million hectoliters of wine were consumed globally in 2025. This figure represents a 2.7 percent decrease compared to 2024 and a 14 percent drop compared to 2018. Experts attribute this decline primarily to changes in consumer lifestyles and uncertainties in the global economy.
Significant decreases have also been recorded in the largest wine markets. In particular, consumption in the USA and Germany fell by 4.3 percent in one year, in France by 3.2 percent, and in Italy by 9.4 percent. The largest decline was observed in China, where wine consumption dropped by 13 percent.
At the same time, growth was recorded in some countries. Although wine consumption increased slightly in countries such as Portugal, Brazil, and Japan, it was not enough to change the global trend.
Experts note that the area of vineyards is also consistently shrinking, and export volumes remain at their lowest level in 15 years. The fact that nearly 10 percent of the world's vineyards have disappeared over the last 25 years is being assessed as a serious signal for the industry.
