A meteorite has been reported hitting the windshield of a Tesla Model Y in Australia.
On October 19, Dr. Andrew Melville-Smith and his wife were driving a newly purchased Tesla Model Y on Augusta Highway at a speed of 110 km/h. Suddenly, a powerful impact hit the car's windshield - all the windows inside shattered.
"At first, a powerful explosion was heard. "The car was covered with shards of glass, smoke came out, and there was even a smell of fire," said Melville-Smith.
During the collision, the driver and his wife became deaf for 10 seconds, but the car's autopilot system activated and continued moving without any human intervention.
"I was shocked. I looked at the screen and saw that the car was still running. The port continued on its way to Augusta. When we stopped, we saw a large crater in the window," the driver said.
The South Australian Museum began studying the phenomenon. Geologist Kiran Meani stated that the burn marks on the glass and the extent of damage to the car as a result of the impact may indicate a meteorite impact.
"The most noteworthy thing is that what hit the windshield was very hot," he said.
The object itself has not yet been found. Experts suggest that it could be a small space fragment containing iron or stone.
Recall that in August 2025, a meteorite also fell on the roof of a residential building in the US state of Georgia. Although similar cases are rare, it has been noted that the number of small meteorite collisions has been increasing in recent years.
