A new industrial area – Kungrad Salt Free Zone – will be established in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, based on the Barsakelmes salt deposit. This area is specialized in salt processing, and the initiative is reinforced by the president’s resolution from November 3 (PQ-333).
The project is expected to attract a total investment of $250 million by 2030. In the first phase, at least $50 million will be utilized by 2026.
Development of the industrial site will start in 2025-2026 on an area of 50 hectares and will be expanded up to 200 hectares as needed. Investors and entrepreneurs implementing projects in the new industrial zone will obtain the status of “Nukus” Free Economic Zone participants and will be granted significant tax and customs incentives for five years.
This project is considered an important part of the strategy to accelerate the socio-economic development of Karakalpakstan. The strategy, previously approved by Shavkat Mirziyoyev, envisions annual growth of gross regional product by 6-6.5 percent.
In addition, in October the head of the Presidential Administration, Saida Mirziyoyeva, announced a plan to implement 27 large projects with a total value of $2 billion in the region. The Barsakelmes salt deposit, where the new industrial area will be established, is part of the dried-up bed of the Aral Sea.
The name Barsakelmes is historically associated with the extremely difficult movement conditions in this area and literally means "the place of no return." Read “Zamin” on Telegram!
