Octopus hearts: The secret of three beats

Why three hearts?
Two of them pump blood through the gills to get oxygen, while the third heart circulates oxygenated blood through the rest of the body. This system allows the octopus to survive deep underwater, move efficiently, and stay alert.

While swimming, the main heart that serves the body stops beating, which makes swimming more tiring. That’s why octopuses often prefer crawling over gliding.

Unlike humans who have iron-based blood, octopuses have copper-based hemocyanin, which helps them carry oxygen more efficiently in cold and low-oxygen environments.
