Recent studies by medical professionals in the US have shown that prolonged use of a smartphone in the bathroom is highly likely to lead to hemorrhoids. The reason is that in such cases, the pressure on the blood vessels in the rectum increases, the tendons and connective tissues weaken, and as a result, painful nodules form.
This disease is often referred to as hemorrhoids among the people. The study was conducted among adults who underwent colonoscopy in Boston from January 8 to December 15, 2024. In this study, which involved a total of 125 people, volunteers answered an online survey about demographic data, eating habits, physical activity, intestinal function, and toilet habits.
According to the results, 66% of participants - that is, 83 people - reported using phones in the bathroom. In 43% of them, hemorrhoids were detected during colonoscopy. Detailed examinations conducted by specialists confirmed this condition through two independent endoscopists and visual examination.
The analysis showed that sitting in the bathroom with a phone increases the risk of hemorrhoids by up to 46%. Scientists explained the main reason for this by one circumstance: the smartphone doesn't let a person feel time, and as a result, the time spent in the toilet increases. Prolonged pressure can lead to vasodilation and the formation of painful nodules.
The authors of the study also gave people a simple recommendation: when entering the bathroom, leave your phone outside, don't spend more than 5 minutes there, and if the process drags on, take a break and then sit back down. Such rules can significantly reduce the risk.
Thus, it has once again been proven that habits that seem ordinary in the modern lifestyle can have a serious impact on health.
