In South Korea’s capital, the problem of social isolation is growing, so since March, the city of Seoul has launched the “warm-hearted stores” project. These places aim to bring lonely individuals back into society by offering free hot meals, conversation, and opportunities for rest. Initially, 5,000 visitors were expected in the first year, but within just a few months, that number exceeded 20,000.
The branch in the Dongdaemun district receives an average of 70–80 visitors a day. According to a 2022 study, about 130,000 young people aged 19–39 in Seoul live with the problem of social isolation. The “warm-hearted stores” create a cozy, home-like atmosphere: watching movies, relaxing in a massage chair, and the opportunity to prepare hot ramyeon noodles.
Experts note that the number of “lonely deaths” in South Korea is increasing. The project organizers chose the term “store” to distinguish it from a psychological help center. This is seen as an important step in a society where there is still stigma associated with seeking psychological assistance.
The stores are not only a place for communication but also provide comfortable climate conditions in cold and hot seasons for low-income people. According to officials, these places help people overcome feelings of loneliness and restore their connection with society.
