Eldor Shomurodov Rescues Roma – Here’s What Ranieri Said
The Italian Serie A has reached its most intense phase, and one of the most anticipated matches of Round 31 took place at the capital’s iconic Olimpico Stadium. A direct clash between two Champions League contenders – Roma and Juventus – delivered all the drama fans were hoping for.

Juventus struck first in the 40th minute with a goal from Manuel Locatelli, giving the visitors a narrow lead. But then came the turning point – Eldor Shomurodov stepped up.

Roma’s head coach Claudio Ranieri had initially considered starting with a two-striker formation, pairing Artem Dovbyk with Eldor Shomurodov. However, just before kickoff, the experienced coach decided to go with only Dovbyk in the starting lineup.

But at halftime, Ranieri reverted to his original plan and introduced Shomurodov to the pitch. The impact was immediate.

The Uzbek striker scored in the 49th minute, levelling the match and rescuing a crucial point for the capital side.

After the game, Ranieri shared his thoughts on Shomurodov’s performance:

“I often think about playing Dovbyk and Shomurodov together from the start. But that requires very careful planning. If I play them both, some of Dovbyk’s responsibilities must shift to Eldor. Shomurodov is definitely a player worthy of the starting XI.

However, if I use both strikers at once, there’s no one left to come on later if I need to strengthen our attacking force. We don’t currently have another central striker in the squad who can step in for them.

I want to play with two forwards, but what happens if one of them gets tired or injured during the game? Who can I bring on then?

That’s why, so far, I’ve been sticking with a single central striker most of the time. But that doesn’t mean it will always be this way. I always think twice before making a decision because I know both Dovbyk and Shomurodov give everything for the team.

I use Eldor off the bench to ease the pressure on Artem. But make no mistake – Eldor is always ready to start and delivers at the highest level, even as a substitute.

It’s very satisfying to see players who didn’t start the match come on and give their all for the team. That kind of attitude is incredibly important for any coach,” said Claudio Ranieri.

Just to recap – Eldor Shomurodov has now featured in 30 matches for Roma this season across Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the Europa League. He’s netted six goals and provided three assists. Once again, the Uzbek forward has proven himself a game-changer when it matters most.
