Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus — the 14-year-old Turkish chess talent — has entered history as the youngest chess player to surpass the 2700 mark in the classical rating. This result has led to him being recognized as a unique phenomenon in the global chess world.
As part of the “Battle of Generations” series held in Monaco from 12 to 17 April, he faced 51-year-old grandmaster Veselin Topalov. From the very first games, the fight was intense, and the decisive turning point came in the second game. The experienced Topalov made a serious mistake, opening the door of opportunity for the young opponent.
After that, the match went fully under Erdogmus’ control. He won the third game, the fourth game ended in a draw, and then he defeated his opponent two more times. The final score was 5:1.
With this result, the Turkish chess player gained 22 rating points and crossed the historic 2700 barrier. This achievement showed him not only as a talent but also as a player with stable psychology and great potential.
Previously, this record belonged to Chinese grandmaster Wei Yi. Now Erdogmus has broken it by almost a year, which highlights the rapid arrival of a new generation in the chess world.
According to experts, reaching such a level at such a young age is a rare occurrence, and he may become one of the leading names in world chess in the future.
