Four-minute championship: The historic drama between Schalke and Bayern

Twenty-five years ago, on May 19, 2001, German football experienced one of the most dramatic moments in its history. On that day, as Schalke 04 finished their match and were ready to celebrate the title, Bayern equalized in their match in Hamburg, depriving the hosts of the championship. This is reported by Goal.com .

Recalling those moments, Gerald Asamoah says he still feels the fans' tears and the painful silence on the pitch in his heart. While the Schalke players believed they had won the title after their victory, Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and Patrik Andersson's free kick changed everything.

The indirect free kick awarded by referee Markus Merk secured another Bundesliga title for Bayern. Asamoah recalls that he couldn't bear to look at the television in fear, and after the deathly silence in the dressing room, he realized that everything had fallen apart.

Head coach Huub Stevens stated after those events that his faith in the football god had faded. Although Schalke 04 won the DFB-Pokal that season, for the fans, the title of "champions of hearts" could never replace the actual championship trophy.
