Aurora and McLane Launch Driverless Freight Operations in Texas

Aurora Innovation, in partnership with logistics giant McLane, has begun transporting cargo using driverless trucks in Texas. Following years of testing, the parties have reached a commercial agreement to autonomously deliver goods between Dallas and Houston. This was reported by Techcrunch.com reporting states.

Although these trucks operate in fully autonomous mode, under an agreement with manufacturer Paccar, a specialist will remain in the cabin to monitor the vehicle without operating it. Aurora plans to expand this service to other distribution centers in the southern U.S. by the end of the year.

While the companies initially worked with safety operators during the testing process that began in 2023, they have now transitioned to a driverless mode seven days a week. Under the new system, Aurora trucks handle long-haul highway transport, after which the cargo is handed over to McLane drivers for local delivery.

This contract marks a significant step for Aurora as the company actively works to commercialize its technology and become a revenue-generating operator. Previously, agreements were also signed with companies such as Detmar Logistics and Hirschbach Motor Lines.
