Why doctors don't answer calls: Is AI the solution?

Why doctors don't answer calls: Is AI the solution?

When discussing artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, the focus is often on diagnostics or drug discovery. However, the system's weakest point is the administrative process between doctor and patient. After a primary care physician issues a referral, the process of booking an appointment with a specialist is often inefficient due to paperwork and delays. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

Basata founders Khaled Alhanafi and Chetan Patel are seeking a solution to this exact problem. Their personal experience showed that even medical professionals struggle to provide quick help to their loved ones due to complex bureaucratic hurdles. Many clinics are still forced to process hundreds of documents arriving via fax, which causes patients to miss out on appointments.

The Basata system automatically reads documents received via fax, extracts the necessary information, and contacts the patient via an AI voice assistant to schedule an appointment. The system is integrated with electronic medical records, allowing patients to book appointments even before they reach their car after leaving the doctor's office.

The company has processed referrals for nearly 500,000 patients so far and recently raised $21 million in funding. The founders plan to capture the market in stages: starting with cardiology, then moving into urology. Their goal is to free medical services from bureaucracy and make them more accessible for patients.
