Chelsea Gives Its Home to Shakhtar: Champions League in London

Stamford Bridge, one of England’s legendary stadiums, will host Champions League matches again this season. However, the team taking the field will not be hosts Chelsea, but Ukrainian club Shakhtar. According to Goal.com, the Premier League giants and the Ukrainian champions have signed an agreement under which the Donetsk side will play its home matches in Europe’s prestigious competition in London. Goal.com reports .

Shakhtar Donetsk has been forced to play its international matches outside Ukraine since losing the Donbas Arena and its home base. Against the backdrop of the difficult conditions facing Ukrainian football, this decision will allow the team to compete properly in European competitions. Choosing London was also a strategic move from both geographical and demographic perspectives.

London Fans and Support

According to data from the 2021 United Kingdom census, approximately 19,000 Ukrainians lived in the country’s capital. Following the events of 2022, that figure increased by another 45,000. This gives Shakhtar a ready-made fan base and a strong atmosphere in London.

Chelsea’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season and absence from European competitions made this partnership considerably easier to arrange. The gap in London’s international match calendar opened the way for Stamford Bridge to be made available to Shakhtar. As the Ukrainian league champions, the Donetsk club received direct qualification for the Champions League league phase and is guaranteed to host at least four home matches at the arena.

A Historic Partnership and Emotions

The Ukrainian club’s management made no secret of its satisfaction with the agreement. An official statement released by Shakhtar said: “Playing our Champions League home matches at Stamford Bridge is a special opportunity for us. We would like to thank Chelsea for allowing us to host our matches at this special venue.”

The statement also highlighted that Stamford Bridge is one of the most famous stadiums in world football, with a rich history. Club representatives expressed their belief that the London matches would provide unforgettable emotions not only for Ukrainians but also for English football fans. Shakhtar has been a regular Champions League participant for the past two decades, and the team’s best result in the competition was reaching the quarter-finals in the 2010–11 season.
