The government of El Salvador has agreed to accept migrants deported by the United States, as well as people convicted of violent crimes, and to place them in local prisons, Deutsche Welle reported.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele reached the agreement during a meeting on February 3.
“A number of agreements have been reached to combat the massive waves of illegal migration that are currently destabilizing the situation throughout the region,” the State Department in Washington said in a statement.
According to this information, Bukele agreed to accept all members of the Salvadoran MS-13 criminal group and the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.
“In an extraordinary gesture that no other country has ever made, President Bukele has offered to house dangerous American criminals, including U.S. citizens and legal residents, in its prisons,” the State Department said.

In turn, the president of El Salvador said that for a certain fee, U.S. criminals would be housed in Salvador Cecot prison.
“The costs are relatively low for the United States, but they will be significant for us,” Bukele said.
The giant Cecot prison, which can hold up to 40,000 prisoners, was opened two years ago in El Salvador as part of the fight against organized crime. Since then, the number of murders in the country has dropped significantly.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is on his first working trip since taking office. As part of the trip, he visited Panama and El Salvador. He is then expected to travel to Guatemala, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, where he will discuss the mass deportation of illegal immigrants announced by US President Donald Trump.
