US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that nuclear weapons could be supplied to Ukraine. He said this in an interview with Breitbart News.
According to Hegseth, the supply of such weapons depends on the decision of US President Donald Trump.
This is not my job. This is the president's job. He is a leader, a master of negotiations and making deals, the Pentagon chief said.
He added that his job is to help set certain conditions to increase the likelihood of a peace agreement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that as part of a peace agreement, Ukraine should either become a member of NATO or be given nuclear weapons to protect itself from future Russian aggression.
"Give us back the nuclear weapons and give us enough missiles to stop Russia," he said in an interview with British TV host Piers Morgan.
The Pentagon chief responded by saying that Ukraine should make a statement based on "realistic realities" and not on "red lines."
"As we see it, NATO membership is unlikely. If we want to achieve peace through negotiations, if you (Ukraine) want a ceasefire and the possibility of a long-term peace, that is not in the plans at the moment. "Returning to the 2014 borders is not currently on the agenda," Hegseth said.
New US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking at the Ramstein format meeting in Brussels, stressed that returning Ukraine to its 1991 borders was not a realistic goal. He said that Ukraine's accession to NATO would not help resolve the war peacefully. Trump, on the other hand, stressed that he wanted to end the war diplomatically.
Hegseth also said that the US would not send troops to Ukraine under any circumstances.
Meanwhile, Estonia, together with international partners, said it was ready to send its military to Ukraine as part of a post-war peacekeeping mission. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
