South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol, who declared martial law in the country in December 2024, has apologized to citizens. This was reported by Yonhap, citing the politician's statement at the republic's Constitutional Court.
"First of all, I want to say that I am sorry, and also thank the people," he said.
Although the politician felt a sense of gratitude, he noted that he regretted not being able to complete his work within the time given to him.
At the meeting where the issue of impeachment of the president was being considered, his defense attorney said that martial law was lifted after two hours and that "no citizen was injured during the period between the decree being issued and its lifting." Lawyer Lee Dong-chan said in court that Yoon had introduced the regulation in connection with opposition movements in parliament.
Yonhap reported that the court could issue a ruling within two weeks, around mid-March.
Yoon Seok-yeol's arrest
On January 15, South Korean investigators arrested Yoon Seok-yeol in a second attempt. The first attempt to arrest the ousted president took place on January 3. However, Yoon Seok-yeol's bodyguards resisted the police's arrest. In the second attempt, after a long standoff, investigators managed to take the president to the Corruption Eradication Bureau.
Yoon Seok-yeol had released a video message before his arrest, saying that he considered the arrest "illegal" but had decided to obey investigators and police to avoid bloodshed.
In early December, the South Korean president tried unsuccessfully to impose martial law in the country, after which the parliament accused him of attempting to incite rebellion and impeached the head of state.
Yun was removed from office on December 14 (after the parliament voted to impeach him). He himself had already denied the charges of attempting to incite rebellion in the first half of December, saying that the imposition of martial law was a “politically justified decision.” He had made such a decision to protect the country from the opposition, which had paralyzed the country.
His 48-hour detention was suspended after the president’s lawyers tried to challenge the legality of the arrest. A new warrant was issued for his subsequent arrest.
