Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has once again blocked a joint declaration on Ukraine that was planned to be adopted by the European Union countries.
Orbán announced his position on Twitter on March 20:
“Veto! Stop! We ask the Hungarian people for Ukraine’s membership in the EU. Until then, we cannot support any common position on this issue,” the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote.
European Union position
The leaders of the 26 European Union member states have adopted a declaration of support for Ukraine. The document calls for the European Union to step up efforts to meet Ukraine’s urgent military and defense needs, AFP reported.
At the initiative of the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, the EU plans to allocate 5 billion euros for artillery ammunition to Ukraine.
The document also mentions support for Ukraine's reforms on the path to EU membership.
Orbán blocks EU military aid decisions
Viktor Orbán has blocked or delayed EU decisions on Ukraine in the past.
Politico reported on March 4 that the Hungarian government had blocked the EU from approving a new €20 billion military aid package for Ukraine.
The decision came ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28.
Politico reported on February 21, citing EU diplomats, that a €20 billion military aid package was being developed, but that due to Hungarian opposition, the funds could be provided by individual countries rather than from the EU's general fund.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán continues to clash with the European Union over Ukraine. He believes that the Hungarian people should be consulted before making a decision on EU membership.
The situation could seriously affect the EU's plans to provide assistance to Ukraine and accelerate Kiev's integration process. EU members are seeking to increase military and financial assistance to Ukraine, but Hungary has so far blocked this process. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
