Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has once again announced his intention to become the president of Ireland on his page on the X social network.
“Ireland, the choice is yours, and it’s very simple. Elect me as your president and together we will save Ireland,” McGregor wrote.
In another post, he sharply criticized the European Union’s migration pact, approved in May 2024. According to this document, countries must accept a certain number of migrants each year or pay money to neighboring countries that accept them. Ireland must fulfill this obligation by June 12, 2026. McGregor believes that this issue should be put to a referendum.
“Who else would oppose the government but me? No candidate they put forward could ever oppose them. But I can! If I were president, I would put this bill to a referendum. I am strongly opposed to this pact, but this decision is independent of me and the government,” he wrote.
Earlier this week, McGregor met with US President Donald Trump at the White House. During a briefing, he criticized the Irish government, saying that “the government has sold out the people’s vote and allowed migrants to take over their towns in the regions.”
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin responded to McGregor’s statement by saying that “it does not reflect the views of the Irish people.”
McGregor first announced his intention to run for president in September 2024. Ireland’s presidential election is due in November 2025. The current president is 83-year-old Michael Higgins.
Meanwhile, in November 2023, a court found Conor McGregor guilty of raping a woman named Nikita Hand in Dublin and ordered him to pay the victim more than €248,000 in damages. The court later ordered the athlete to pay an additional €1.5 million in compensation, which includes legal costs.
