Coup attempt foiled in Syria — Assad supporters arrested
The new government in Syria has foiled a coup attempt. This was announced by the country's Interior Minister Anas Khattab, the state news agency SANA reported.

According to the minister, the coup plan was prepared by officers affiliated with the former regime, that is, the government of Bashar al-Assad. The exact time was not specified, but it is said that this attempt was thwarted with the cooperation of the state armed forces and the people.

"We have foiled a coup planned by officers of the overthrown regime," said Anas Khattab.

Conflicts with Assad's supporters and armed clashes

The political instability in Syria reached its peak in March. In the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, Hama and Homs, fierce resistance and armed clashes took place between the Alawites, who are supporters of Assad, and the new government forces.

As a result, more than 1,300 people were killed, at least 1,000 of them civilians.

Government forces have completed security raids that began on March 10. According to the Syrian Ministry of Defense, "the remnants of the externally supported Assad regime have been neutralized."

The fate of Assad and compromises with Russia

The new Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara'a has since demanded that Russia extradite Bashar al-Assad. According to Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, he wants Assad returned to Syria to stand trial.

However, Moscow rejected this demand. Russian officials assess this issue as not an "insurmountable obstacle" to the restoration of relations between the two countries.
