As a result of the investigation, it turned out that Santos used the funds collected through donations for his election campaign for his personal needs, including buying expensive clothes and paying off personal debts.

Another fraudulent practice of his was also uncovered. He simultaneously registered as unemployed and received benefits from the state. However, it was found that in reality he worked for an investment company and regularly received large salaries.

As a result, the US Attorney's Office brought serious criminal charges against George Santos, including fraud, financial fraud, embezzlement of state funds, and providing false information to the US Congress. In May 2023, the former deputy was arrested and officially expelled from the House of Representatives in December of this year.

It is worth noting that George Santos became the sixth congressman in US history to be expelled from the House of Representatives. The vote on his removal from office was held in December 2023, and this was the first such case in the last 20 years.

In August 2024, Santos reached an agreement with the prosecutor's office, admitted part of his guilt and agreed to pay a fine of $ 370,000.
