Zelensky invited Putin and Trump to a historic meeting: is peace close?

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky once again attracted international attention by proposing a high-level trilateral negotiation involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. The main goal of this important meeting would be to ease the tension between the two countries and take a step toward peace.

At the same time, Zelensky stated that if the trilateral format does not work out, he is also ready to participate in separate bilateral meetings with both Trump and Putin. According to the Ukrainian leader, holding these meetings simultaneously and in a single location is very important for the effectiveness of the negotiations. This proposal has sparked great interest in international political circles, and many analysts regard it as a serious step toward peace.

Zelensky also mentioned that such meetings could be held in neutral countries. Specifically, he expressed readiness for technical-level negotiations in countries traditionally known as platforms for international dialogue — such as the Vatican or Switzerland. Such neutral grounds play an important role in facilitating more productive dialogue between political powers.

In addition, Zelensky emphasized that if the situation requires it, a direct meeting at the leadership level could be held even without prior preparation. This signals that the negotiations may have urgency and exceptional importance.

It is worth noting that this initiative follows the direct Russia–Ukraine talks held in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 16, 2025. Although important issues were raised at that meeting, no sufficient result was achieved to fully de-escalate the conflict or end the war. Therefore, Zelensky now insists on organizing a new, high-level format for talks.

The Ukrainian president’s initiative reflects a desire to resolve the conflict diplomatically, without further escalation. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump’s participation in the process would be important, given that U.S. sanctions and other restrictions have contributed to the escalation of the conflict.

According to international analysts, this proposal offers an opportunity to reassess relations between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, and to make new strategic decisions in favor of peace. A trilateral meeting could open the door not only to regional but also to global peace.

So far, neither the U.S. nor Russia has officially responded to Zelensky’s proposal. However, the international community is observing the initiative with interest and hope. If this meeting does take place, it could become a major turning point in easing tensions between the two states.

Thus, Zelensky’s proposal may play an important role in establishing peace and fostering diplomatic dialogue in the future. A meeting between the three leaders in one place would undoubtedly go down in political history as a landmark event. Now, the world awaits whether the meeting will happen.
