US Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth has sparked heated debate in the international political arena with his recent statement. In an interview with Fox News, he confirmed that Washington has transferred anti-drone systems intended for Ukraine to the US military in the Middle East.
“The question was asked in Congress, and I answered frankly: ‘Yes, we have transferred these systems,’” Hegseth said. He stressed that the US is fundamentally changing its defense strategy to be ready for modern military threats.
According to the Pentagon chief, the nature of wars in the new era is taking on a completely different look. “Small drones, including cheap and easily manufactured systems, can also pose a very serious threat. But our country is ready for this threat - we have the knowledge, technology and, most importantly, experienced military personnel,” he stressed.
According to The Wall Street Journal, on June 5, the United States secretly sent special missile systems designed to strengthen Ukraine's defenses to military bases in the Middle East. This decision was officially announced to Congress by Peter Hegseth, but without much fanfare and press.
Notably, shortly after, on June 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world community to be vigilant. According to him, the US leadership had sent 20,000 anti-drone missiles to the Middle East, which it had previously promised to provide to Ukraine.
Although Zelensky did not express dissatisfaction with this decision, he diplomatically expressed his concern. According to him, this may give rise to the idea that Ukraine's primacy on the world political map is fading.
This may indicate that the US strategic priority is shifting to the Middle East, and the Ukrainian problem is being relegated to a less important area. Political analysts see this as a sign of the beginning of major changes in the global political situation. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
