Amid rising military tensions between Israel and Iran in recent days, the Azerbaijani government has taken a serious diplomatic step. According to the Trend agency, Baku officials officially appealed to Israel, requesting that no strikes be carried out in regions of Iran inhabited by people of Azerbaijani ethnicity and to avoid harming civilian infrastructure — such as schools, hospitals, mosques, and residential neighborhoods.
This request was conveyed to the Israeli administration both through official diplomatic channels and through friendly states. In a statement from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“We call on the parties to act with restraint, comply with international law, and protect civilians regardless of their national or religious affiliation,” the statement said.
Baku also reminded that millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis live in Iran’s East and West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, and Zanjan provinces — these regions must not be harmed by Israeli strikes.
According to experts, Azerbaijan, which maintains friendly relations with both Israel and Iran, is trying to remain neutral during wartime and ensure the safety of its compatriots.
Official statistics estimate that between 25 and 35 million people in Iran are ethnic Azerbaijanis — about 40% of the country’s population.
It is known that on the morning of June 13, Israel launched air strikes across Tehran and other provinces of Iran, claiming that “Iran is close to obtaining nuclear weapons.” Geographically, the areas where Azerbaijanis live in Iran are also at risk of being targeted.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes against Israel. The UN, International Red Crescent, and other international organizations expressed concern over the rising civilian casualties and urged both sides to cease hostilities immediately.
