The political scene in South Korea is once again heating up. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol is facing even more serious action — the Seoul court has decided to arrest him for a second time, Yonhap News Agency reported.
This decision was made as part of the high-profile case regarding the imposition of martial law. In December 2024, Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law in the country, which sparked harsh criticism from both the parliament and the public. As a result, he was impeached and arrested in January 2025. However, the court released him from detention in March.
Nevertheless, the investigation continued. On July 6, 2025, South Korea’s special prosecution once again requested an arrest warrant and this time presented five serious charges. These include bypassing the powers of cabinet members, falsifying official documents, and spreading false information regarding martial law.
The charges are very serious. According to the special prosecutors, Yoon Suk-yeol violated the law by attempting to undermine the country’s constitutional system. The judge emphasized the high risk of evidence tampering and issued the arrest warrant.
The former president is currently being held in a detention center in Seoul, awaiting the court’s next decision. The case involving charges of insurrection and other serious allegations is still ongoing.
Yoon Suk-yeol and his defense team deny the accusations, labeling the case as political persecution. However, the judiciary and special investigators are handling the matter with utmost seriousness. In the coming weeks, this issue is expected to remain one of the most widely discussed both domestically and internationally. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
