US President Donald Trump described the situation in Gaza as a “real famine.” This statement came after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu rejected claims of famine. Speaking in Scotland, Trump told journalists: “These children look very hungry. This is real famine.”
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher called the situation in Gaza a “tragedy of the 21st century” and stressed the urgent need for large-scale aid. While he welcomed Israel’s 10-hour “tactical pauses” and air-dropped supplies, he described them as “a drop in the ocean.”
According to the UN, aid convoys were looted by hungry civilians, putting drivers at risk.
The Israeli government denies the existence of famine. Netanyahu called the accusations “slander.” According to Israel, the main obstacle to aid delivery is Hamas’ actions. The UN said there is no evidence Hamas is systematically obstructing aid.
The WHO reported that in July, 147 people, including 25 children, died in Gaza due to food shortages.
Following Trump’s comments and international pressure, Israel agreed to increase humanitarian aid deliveries in cooperation with the US, Europe, and major organizations. However, experts say stable delivery systems and peace are needed to improve the situation.
