Another terrible tragedy has occurred in Nigeria. In the town of Unguwan-Mantau, located in the Malumfashi district of Katsina State in the northwest of the country, an attack carried out by an armed group shocked the entire nation. According to local reports, on August 19, during morning prayers, militants stormed the mosque and opened fire on civilians, killing many people.
According to Reuters and media.az, at least 50 people were killed as a result of the incident. In addition, it was reported that 60 civilians were forcibly abducted by the militants. This shows that the incident became not only a tragedy, but also a new major source of threat and fear for the local population.
Witnesses described how armed men arrived on motorcycles, opened fire on people inside the mosque, and then moved through the village streets, continuing to attack civilians. They also set several houses on fire. This situation once again demonstrated that the lives and property of the villagers are in complete danger.
Katsina State police spokesman Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu told reporters that security forces managed to detain some of the militants. He also noted that new planned attacks on two villages were prevented. However, those militants who managed to escape attacked people again through the Mantau area, putting lives at risk.
Experts note that in recent years, the activity of illegal armed groups and criminal gangs has sharply increased in northwestern Nigeria. They attack villages, force residents and farmers to pay ransoms, kidnap travelers on roads, and only return them for money.
Undoubtedly, this bloody tragedy in Unguwan-Mantau has become a serious test for the country’s security. Local residents demand decisive measures from the authorities and security forces to ensure peace and stability.
