Japanese town recommends two-hour daily smartphone limit

The Japanese town of Toyoake recommends that residents use smartphones for no more than two hours a day. The proposal is currently being discussed by the city council.

Mayor Masafumi Koki said the limit does not apply during work or study and will not be strictly enforced. The aim is to encourage residents to use screen time wisely.

Some activities, such as watching videos, exercising, online learning, or e-sports practice, are not counted in the two hours. The mayor noted that some students skip school and adults sacrifice sleep or family time due to excessive smartphone use.

The city council may approve the rules in October. The proposal suggests that primary school students stop using devices after 21:00, and older students and adults after 22:00.

Residents have mixed reactions. More than 120 people expressed dissatisfaction, 80% opposed the plan, but some supported the proposal.
