Study: 93 percent of German pilots fell asleep during flight

In Germany, a survey conducted by the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit with the participation of more than 900 pilots showed alarming results. According to the study, 93 percent of respondents reported that they had fallen asleep in the cockpit at least once during flights, reports The Guardian.

According to union vice-president Katharina Dusseldorf, the issue is not a one-time short nap but constant fatigue. “The continuous exhaustion of the cockpit crew poses a serious risk,” she said.

The survey indicated that 12 percent of pilots fall asleep on almost every flight, 44 percent do so regularly, 33 percent from time to time, and 3 percent experienced it only once. The remaining 7 percent could not specify how often this happens.

The union described this situation as a “worrying reality,” linking it to staff shortages, the growing fatigue of pilots, and pressure from management. Dusseldorf added that “what was initially intended as a short-term recovery measure has now become a permanent response to systemic pressure.”

The union admitted that the survey is not scientifically representative, but its results highlight a serious problem that airlines and authorities must address as soon as possible.
