China is considered the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases. President Xi Jinping said at a UN meeting that the country will cut emissions by 7–10 percent by 2035. This was the first time China made a commitment with a specific figure to reduce emissions.
Experts assessed this decision as one of the positive steps. However, they also point out that this figure is not enough to achieve international goals. Because to keep global temperature below 1.5 degrees, much larger reductions are necessary.
According to the plan, China will expand wind and solar power plants, increase forest areas, and introduce mainly electric transport in new cars. The country has already achieved some targets ahead of schedule.
At the same time, China still heavily relies on coal. According to experts, much stricter measures are needed to sharply reduce emissions. But this pledge indicates that China is taking environmental issues more seriously in the future.
