James Comey, the former head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a key figure in the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election, may face a new trial. He was charged with false testimony and obstructing justice. This was reported on September 26th by the influential American television channel ABC News.
According to reports, the federal prosecutor's office of the Eastern District of Virginia accuses Comie of providing unfounded and false information about the FBI's investigation into possible connections between Donald Trump's campaign headquarters and Russia in his speech to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020. Although all the details of the charges have not been disclosed, lawyers say that the former official could face up to five years in prison.
Comy himself considered himself completely innocent and assessed this situation as political revenge. He emphasized that behind the accusations lies President Donald Trump's personal revenge. "My family and I know that taking an anti-Trump position always comes at a cost. But we will never accept living on our knees. No one has to live in such a situation, losing their high dignity," Komi said. At the same time, he expressed hope that the federal judicial system will make an impartial and fair decision.
Notably, the charges against Komi were brought after a dramatic change in the Virginia prosecutor's office. Trump previously dismissed Federal Attorney Eric Siebert. According to sources, Siebert did not find sufficient grounds to initiate criminal proceedings against Komi, based on instructions from the Senate. Trump also appointed his trusted White House aide and former lawyer, Lindsay Halligan, to replace him.
Officials emphasize that this process could cause further major controversy on the US political scene. Because Komi is not only the former head of the FBI, but also one of the key figures involved in one of the largest conflicts during the Trump administration - the case of Russian interference in the elections.
