A major agreement on nuclear energy was signed in the Iranian capital. Tehran and Moscow signed an agreement on the construction of new nuclear power plant blocks. Interestingly, the document was adopted just one day before the expiration of the period during which the UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic could be reinstated. This was reported by the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization (EAET).
The agreement was signed between the Iranian company Iran Hormoz and the joint venture "Rusatom Energy Projects," part of the Russian corporation "Rosatom." According to AFP, the total value of the contract is estimated at around $25 billion (21 billion euros).
Within the framework of the project, the construction of four modern third-generation power units with a capacity of 1255 megawatts each is planned. As a result, the total capacity of the station will be 5020 megawatts.
According to the data, nuclear units will be built on an area of 500 hectares in the Sirik port area of southern Iran, in the Hormozgan region. According to the EAEU, the site for the facility has already been selected, and engineering and environmental surveys have been fully completed.
So far, Rosatom officials have not commented on this agreement. However, the adoption of the document is expected to take Iran and Russia's cooperation in the energy sector to a new level and, at the same time, cause widespread discussion in the international arena.
Such a major step in energy supply and nuclear infrastructure will not only serve to meet Iran's domestic needs but may also affect the geopolitical balance in the region.
