The Fratelli d'Italia party, led by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, has submitted a bill to parliament to ban the wearing of burqas, masks, and paranjas in public places and strengthen control over the financing of mosques, according to the party's official website.
Deputies of the FDI party submitted the draft law to the lower house of parliament - the Chamber of Deputies under the title "Against Discrimination." The document proposes to prohibit burqas, masks, and paranjas in public places such as government institutions, schools, and universities, to introduce transparency in charity and financing for mosques, and to establish stricter penalties for forced marriage.
According to the bill, violators of the paranja ban can be fined from 300 to 3000 euros (from three hundred to three thousand euros). In January of this year, the League party in the Meloni coalition also proposed a similar law, but its scope was narrower than the FDI project. Although the "League" project is currently under consideration in the parliamentary committee, it is unclear whether it will be combined with the FDI proposal. The date of the discussion of the law has not yet been determined, however, due to the fact that right-wing parties have a majority in parliament, the probability of its adoption is assessed as high.
