Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that the fight for nuclear weapons in the world has practically begun. He spoke about this at a press conference following his working visit to Tajikistan on October 10.
"In fact, it can be said that a certain nuclear race has begun. Currently, various countries are actively working in this direction," Putin said.
The Russian leader also touched upon the development of a new generation of weapons in the country.
"I think that in the near future we will have the opportunity to provide information about the new weapons that we announced several years ago. They are undergoing testing, and the results are encouraging," he added.
According to Putin, if the United States refuses to extend the strategic offensive arms reduction agreement, this will not be a decisive factor for Russia. He noted that Russia's nuclear deterrence potential is currently at the highest level in the world.
At the end of September, the Russian president stated at a Security Council meeting that if Washington made a similar decision, Moscow would be ready to adhere to the treaty's provisions for another year. At the same time, Putin stressed that with the expiration of the last international agreement directly limiting nuclear weapons, it will lose its force.
Later, US President Donald Trump, during a meeting with journalists at the White House, assessed Putin's proposal as a "good idea," but declined to provide further information or comment.
Thus, the dispute over nuclear weapons has once again become a major topic in the global political arena - each state is trying to clearly define its own security boundaries.
