Singapore man executed for possessing 52 grams of heroin

A 38-year-old Malaysian citizen, Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, accused of possessing heroin, was executed in Singapore. He was arrested in 2014 with 52 grams of heroin and sentenced to death by the court.

According to Singaporean law, possession of more than 15 grams of heroin can lead to the death penalty. The government considers this measure as “protecting society from drugs,” while human rights activists regard it as a violation of human rights.

Amnesty International has called on Singapore to abolish the death penalty. According to the organization, Pranthaman was a drug courier and did not know the exact quantity of the substance.

For reference, at least 12 people have been executed in Singapore this year for drug-related crimes.
