Cause of the “Titan” Submarine Disaster Revealed

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its final report on the 2023 OceanGate “Titan” submarine disaster. According to AP, the fatal incident that occurred during an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic was caused by an engineering error.

The report stated that serious mistakes were made during the design and construction of the “Titan.” The engineering solutions did not meet international strength standards, and the company failed to conduct sufficient testing or determine the vessel’s real stability.

Experts believe OceanGate neglected its internal safety protocols. This issue was also previously highlighted by the U.S. Coast Guard, whose report found major discrepancies between the company’s declared safety policies and its actual practices.

The 6.5-meter-long “Titan” submarine began its dive on June 18, 2023, in the Atlantic Ocean to explore the Titanic wreck. Hours later, the vessel imploded and sank — all five people on board were killed.

Among the victims were British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, and French deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

Analysts say the “Titan” tragedy should serve as a serious lesson for the private research sector. In pursuit of technological frontiers, humanity sometimes forgets its own limits — this disaster stands as a stark reminder of that truth.
