Zelensky: “We didn’t discuss Tomahawk missiles with the U.S.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an important statement after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. According to him, Kyiv and Washington did not discuss the possible delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine — because the U.S. “does not want escalation.”

“We agreed not to talk about it. America doesn’t want escalation,” Zelensky said. At the same time, he noted that Ukraine is interested in obtaining such missiles. “I’m neither an optimist nor a pessimist — I’m a realist,” he told reporters.

Zelensky also clarified that he did not discuss possible strikes on Russian energy facilities with Trump. Instead, the main topics were security guarantees and ensuring lasting peace for Ukraine.

“Even if we manage to achieve a ceasefire, we must be prepared for Putin’s renewed aggression. That’s why clear security guarantees from the U.S. are essential,” he said.

The president called territorial issues “the hardest part” of the war: “The Russians truly want to seize all territories. But before peace talks, some agreements must be reached. The first step is achieving a ceasefire.”

After the meeting with Trump, Zelensky also held a phone conversation with European leaders. Participants included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, as well as the prime ministers of the UK, Italy, Norway, Poland, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Observers believe Zelensky’s statement was a diplomatic signal aimed at maintaining balance in U.S.-Ukraine relations — Washington continues to support Kyiv but does not wish to escalate the conflict to a new phase.
