In Tajikistan’s Ismoil Somoni mountain range, part of a large glacier broke away from the main body.
According to the data, the incident occurred on October 25 around 11:00 a.m. near the village of Saftab in the Tajikabad district. The detached section of the glacier was approximately 2 kilometers long, 25 meters high, and 150–200 meters wide.
The Emergency Situations Service reported that the glacier’s movement did not cause any damage to the population or infrastructure. The incident ended without consequences.
Experts link the event to climate change and the steady rise in air temperature. Previously, such glacier collapses were mostly observed in the Himalayas — in India and Nepal — but in recent years, similar events have increasingly been recorded in the mountain glaciers of Central Asia.
Glaciologists warn that if heavy rainfall occurs in the coming days, another part of the glacier could break off. This may pose a threat to several farming households in the Gulrez community near the village of Qasa-i-Nabi.
According to estimates, if the glacier melts completely, it could produce about 7–8 million cubic meters of water. However, scientists emphasize that this process is not expected to cause a sudden flood.
