The government of Saudi Arabia has revised the scope of The Line project. Initially planned as a 170-kilometer linear megapolis, this project will now be implemented on a much smaller scale due to rising costs and changing economic conditions.
The Line project is an important part of the "Vision 2030" strategy and is based on the concept of a utopian city without cars. It was originally designed for 9 million residents.
According to the new plan, by 2030 only a 2.4-kilometer section will be built, and its population is expected to be less than 300,000. The project's reduced scale was caused by oil market fluctuations and increased construction costs.
This situation has put pressure on the budget of the Neom megapolis, which is worth billions of dollars. As a result, the government led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was forced to review the plans.
Due to the project's downsizing, some contractors have started laying off workers. Despite the changes to The Line project, work continues on Neom’s other facilities, including tourist and industrial zones.
Many experts had assessed this project as excessively ambitious and doomed to fail from the outset. Read “Zamin” on Telegram!
